Color Chart: The Joys of a Bright White Home
How you use color in a luxury home can dramatically shape how it feels. Some interiors instantly draw you in, while others fade into the background—and often, the difference lies in the color palette. While deep blues are known for their calming effect and bold reds spark conversation, white delivers something more nuanced: a refined sense of calm, openness, and quiet sophistication.
In this installment of our color-focused luxury design series, white takes center stage—not as a blank canvas, but as a versatile, expressive design choice with surprising depth.

For decades, white has been a favorite in contemporary interiors, particularly in sun-filled regions. Its popularity continues to evolve, especially with “Cloud Dancer,” a warm, softly layered off-white, named Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2026. The recognition highlights how white can feel inviting rather than stark when thoughtfully selected.
That said, white interiors are not without challenges.
“In a contemporary house with clean lines, the idea of using white everywhere with tiny pops of neutral can feel clinical very quickly,” says Lisa Shaffer, chief executive and creative director of Lisa & Leroy, a Washington, D.C.–based interior design firm. The solution, she explains, lies in carefully layering textures and materials to soften the look and create warmth.

A secluded, sunlit retreat in the Hollywood Hills illustrates this principle beautifully. At first glance, the home appears entirely white, but closer inspection reveals subtle variation: poured concrete walls, porcelain flooring, and dark oak cabinetry all share similar undertones while offering visual contrast. These nuanced material shifts prevent the palette from feeling flat or cold.
The surrounding environment also plays a role. Shaffer notes that the home’s views of the tree-covered mountains of Laurel Canyon likely informed the design choices. With no ocean in sight, the brighter white tones provide contrast against the greenery, enhancing the connection to nature rather than competing with it.
Mykonos, Greece | Greece Sotheby’s International Realty
In Greece, white behaves differently. On cliffside landscapes dotted with traditionally whitewashed homes, the color appears cooler and more luminous. According to Shaffer, this effect is intentional—it heightens the surrounding blues of the sea, allowing the water to become the visual focal point.
A contemporary subterranean villa in Melora, Mykonos, located just minutes from the island’s main town, demonstrates this approach. By limiting the palette to white surfaces paired with natural teak and restrained accessories, the architecture recedes and the iconic Cycladic views take center stage.
Belgravia, London | United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty
White’s versatility extends beyond modern coastal homes. A 19th-century mansion in London’s Belgrave Square highlights why Italianate stucco villas remain defining features of prestigious neighborhoods such as Mayfair, Belgravia, Kensington, and Chelsea.
Inside the home, white hallways function as what Shaffer calls a “palette cleanser.” They offset the richer hues found in reception rooms and bedrooms, while also creating a sense of continuity throughout the expansive residence. “This house is a good reminder that a home is meant to be cohesive—not matching,” she explains.
Vero Beach, Florida | ONE Sotheby’s International Realty
Similarly, an oceanfront estate in Ocean Pearl, a gated community in Vero Beach, Florida, balances crisp white interiors and exteriors with warmer architectural details. Wood ceilings and floors, Shaker-style cabinetry, and classic crown molding add depth and comfort. “You could place this house almost anywhere and believe it belongs,” says Shaffer, pointing to the strength of its architectural choices. These details, she adds, shape how a home feels emotionally—and here, the result is a space that feels welcoming, livable, and timeless.
